Located on the outskirts of Paris, the Maison Louis Carré designed by Alvar Aalto, the villa designed by the great Finnish architect in 1956, now a house-museum open to visitors, is the setting for When Our Eyes Touch group exhibition: on display, a series of works by contemporary artists representing the first chapter of A I S T I T / coming to our senses - a year long exhibition cycle featuring performances and public works around France.
The exhibition displays the work by contemporary artists working on the theme of the senses through different media, united by the intention of getting in tune with the interiors designed by Aalto, the master of modern Scandinavian style, all conceived according to the concepts that distinguish organic and functional design.
Belonging to the Carré couple until 2003, the house was subsequently bought by the Alvar Aalto Foundation. Its interiors, which usually act as the setting for exhibitions and artistic and cultural events, have remained almost unchanged, with original made to measure details by Aalto, together with all the furnishings wich are jewels of Scandinavian vintage design.
Louis Carré was a great French art dealer, with a keen interest in the innovative architecture and design that emerged in the second half of the 20th century. He commissioned this house to Aalto, with the idea that the space should accommodate many guests, while maintaining its intimate and private character.
