Oil on canvas. The child, future King Charles II of Spain (1661 -1700),
is depicted here still as an archduke, therefore before the age of four, the age at which, upon the death of his father, he became king, albeit with the regency of his mother Mariana of Austria. The child wears the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck and holds a sceptre in his hand. The portrait, restored and relined, is presented in a valuable 17th-century box frame (estimated value alone €1100), in carved and gilded wood (slight loss of gilding).
