Item description

Emilian school of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work of extraordinary pictorial quality depicting a rare biblical subject, Amnon and Tamar, a story of love and hate between the sons of King David. The Bible tells us that Tamar was so beautiful that her brother Amnon fell in love with her. He pretended to be ill and asked his father to call her so that he could bring him some pancakes made with her hands. Once they were alone Amnon approached her and when the young woman refused, he raped her. After having satisfied his appetites, Amnon begins to feel great hatred for his sister and has her chased away, perhaps because he had resisted, or perhaps because she was the living accusation of the infamy he had committed. Tamar flees in despair and tells everything to another brother, Absalom, who will avenge her sister by killing Amnon a few years later. A work of notable pictorial quality which takes as its model a composition by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino (1591-1666). On the back there is an ancient sealing wax from the Parma academy (see photo) and a pen reference that would attribute it to Guercino's nephew and pupil, Benedetto Gennari (1633-1715), which lacks authenticity. 20th century frame in carved and ebonized wood, with some signs of aging. Work already restored with relining and replacement of the frame. It has several discolorations (see photo), overall in good state of conservation. Light painting H 112 x W 147 cm.
