Item description

Ancient landscape with figures from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting a splendid Flemish landscape which frames a famous episode of the New Testament, the appearance of Jesus on the road to Emmaus after the resurrection. Two disciples were walking along the road when they met Christ. They immediately don't recognize him and talk to him about their sadness for the recent and terrible events that had affected their teacher. He persuades them to dine with him and at the breaking of the bread they finally recognized him. The painting has a plate (see photo) with the reference to Jacques D'Arthois (1613-1686) and David Teniers (1610-1690), which lacks authenticity. The very high quality of execution and the particular type of representation make the veracity of the plaque plausible, also because it was David Teniers himself who took care of the figures in Jacques D'Arthois' landscapes. Spectacular 19th century wood and plaster frame, with some signs of aging. Work already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in excellent state of conservation. Painting light H 60 x W 73 cm.
