Item description
Oil on canvas. This is a copy of the famous work by Raphael Sanzio (1483 -1520), painted by the Urbino artist in 1513-1514 and currently housed in the Palatine Gallery of Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The figures, inscribed in a tondo as in the original work, consist of Mary, seated on a rich chair, the Infant Jesus in her arms, and St. John at her side; while the Mother and Child look forward, Mary directly towards the viewer, Jesus a little further away, Little John emerges from the dark background and addresses a gesture of prayer to Mary. The chair on which Mary sits is a Chamber chair, i.e. one of the privileged seats of the Pope, a strong symbol of authority in doctrine and certain teaching, attributes of Mary: she is the Mother of God who sits in the cathedra. Particular is the colour of Jesus' robe, a central yellow stain that recalls the robe of the “Servant”, a warning to the Pontiff who commissioned the original work. The work is presented in a stylish frame.
