Item description
This elegant and understated French wooden chest of drawers is made entirely of exceptionally high-quality oak. This type of wood, known for its rich color, dimensional stability, impact resistance, and durability, is highly prized in high-end furniture. The natural grain of oak, always unique, gives the dresser an elegant, refined, and distinctive appearance. The chest features two drawers beneath the top and two larger ones at the bottom. Between the top two drawers is a faux lock, added solely for decorative purposes. The six-ring handles, made of cast bronze, depict a Greek amphora with anthropomorphic handles. The drawer fronts and sides of the chest are adorned with elegant bronze trim. The four tapered legs fluted downwards, extend upwards with decorations that further enhance the cabinet's aesthetics. The rectangular top is exquisitely shaped, especially at the front corners. It is crafted from "Bianco Gioia Venato" marble from Carrara, a material quarried in the Apuan Alps and universally recognized as one of the finest marbles in the world. This variety of marble, with a hue so elegant it seems almost ethereal, was chosen by some of the greatest sculptors and artists in history, including Michelangelo, Donatello, Bernini, and Canova, for their most renowned works. The dresser was crafted between 1910 and 1915 in the Louis XVI style at a workshop in Lyon, a city that has been an important center of furniture production since the 17th century. Lyon was renowned for its Renaissance and Rococo-style furniture, produced by numerous factories and craftsmen who created high-quality pieces on commission for wealthy local families. The Louis XVI style, which originated in France in the last decades of the 18th century, quickly spread throughout Europe, winning favor with the public for its classical and elegant lines, in contrast to the asymmetry and abundance of decorative elements typical of the Rococo and Louis XV styles that dominated the previous era. A key element of the Louis XVI style is a renewed interest in the themes of classical Greek and Roman culture, leading to linear forms, geometric composure, symmetrical decoration, and references to antiquity. Garlands, laurel leaves, friezes, floral motifs, mythological inlays, columns, and capitals were combined with luxurious materials such as fine woods, gilded bronze, and marble, in a formal synthesis that reflected the new tastes of the time, which came to be known as Louis XVI. Even today, furniture in this style is synonymous with elegance and prestige. The chest of drawers is in good condition. Dimensions: width 109 cm, depth 50 cm, height 85 cm.
