This exquisite pair of distinctively shaped colored opaline glass vases was blown in one piece (body and base) without seams and then expertly shaped by the skilled craftsmen of the Clichy glassworks in France between 1860 and 1865. Although these pieces bear no maker's marks, we can attribute them to Cristallerie de Clichy with a high degree of certainty. Clichy typically used labels that have since been lost over time. The authenticity of these vases is confirmed by the unique opaline glasswork and the company's characteristic design; examination then of the bottom of the vessels (see photo) is another confirmation of the uniqueness of the hand-making process. The most complex and remarkable aspect of producing these vases was leaving the interior in white opaline glass while applying different colors to the exterior. Colored oxides were added once the draft of the white opalescent vase had just emerged from the kiln. At the precise moment when the colors began to blend and fuse with the white, the craftsman skillfully and quickly blew and shaped the vase, ensuring the colors remained only on the surface, like brushstrokes, without penetrating deeper. The vase was then briefly returned to the kiln and rapidly cooled. This delicate process is reserved for Master Glassmakers due to its complexity. Cristallerie de Clichy is a historic French glass and crystal manufacturer, renowned for its high-quality production during the 19th century. Founded in 1830 in Clichy-la-Garenne, near Paris, the factory played a pivotal role in the history of French art glass, standing out for its production of fine crystal items, including glasses and decorative pieces. Specializing in blown glass, the factory became famous for its ability to create colored glass using innovative techniques. Alongside vases, Cristallerie de Clichy's output included glasses, goblets, bottles, and chandeliers, all made with meticulous attention to detail and advanced techniques for their time. By the mid-19th century, the factory was considered one of France's premier glass manufacturers, alongside other glassworks like Baccarat and Saint-Louis. Its products were highly regarded both in France and internationally, and the factory participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the Universal Exhibitions, where its work received awards for artistic and technical excellence. Despite its prestigious reputation, the factory closed in 1870. However, its creations have endured as a testament to the craftsmanship of the era. Cristallerie de Clichy played a crucial role in solidifying the international reputation of French glassmaking. Although the company is no longer in operation, its influence on glass and crystal production remains evident, with many of its products displayed in museums and private collections worldwide. Its legacy continues to inspire contemporary glass and crystal craftsmanship in France, having set high standards for quality and innovation. The vases are in good condition.
