Item description
Red and Blue by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld is a chair-sculpture with a pure and rational form. An authentic manifesto of the objective approach of Neoplasticism, promoted by the Dutch De Stijl movement in 1917. A poetics also encouraged by Piet Mondrian, whose objective it was the search for the essential nature of things, the harmonious equivalence of colors and the exclusive use of the right angle. Rietveld worked on the first prototypes in 1918, expressing the philosophy of organizing space through the monochrome of the elements. He then applied chromatic differentiation to separate the construction parts based on their functions, leading to the combination of the black structure with the colored support parts. Hence also the variation of the name of the work, which from Slat Chair became Red and Blue. Wear consistent with age and use documented in the images.
