Lamps, chairs, tables, vases, magazine racks, and many other items came to life through the skilled hands and creative minds of that time. The Space Age style, to which this magazine rack belongs, originated at the dawn of the space era, generally marked by the launch of Sputnik in October 1957, and extended into the 1970s. Objects from this movement stood out for their simple volumes and geometric shapes that broke away from the rationalist tradition. During the same period, plexiglass made its debut in the design world, sparking the creativity of many designers and renowned brands who, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, crafted innovative pieces featured in architecture and fashion magazines. Plexiglass thus found its way into homes, bringing a fresh, modern aesthetic to everyday items that had long adhered to traditional standards. Plexiglass is a plastic material technically known as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), or simply methacrylate, named after its structural polymers. "Plexiglass" is the most widely recognized trade name and is commonly used today. This material was invented in 1928 by German chemist Otto Karl Julius Röhm and was commercialized in 1933 by the German company Röhm. The first acrylic sheet, called Perspex (meaning "see through"), was produced in 1936. Its transparency and impact resistance make plexiglass a reliable alternative to glass. These properties, combined with its ductility and versatility, make it suitable for various types of processing and applicable across numerous industries. It is also known by other trade names, including Perspex, Amanite, Lucite, Trespex, Vitroflex, Acrivill, Perclax, Limacryl, Crylux, Oroglas, Setacryl, and Altuglas.
