This set includes five exquisite ceramic plates, hand-decorated with intricate cobalt blue motifs on a white background: Three plates have a diameter of 30 cm. Two of them feature a central design of a small bird surrounded by flowers and vine patterns, with distinct border decorations. The third plate displays a central star encircled by a floral border. The other two plates, with a diameter of 33 cm, showcase a pomegranate motif framed by vine patterns in the center, each complemented by unique decorative borders. Each plate is exclusively hand-painted and faithfully reproduces traditional Umbrian designs from the 18th century. These pieces were crafted between 1950 and 1954 in a small artisanal workshop in Deruta (Perugia, Italy). The ceramic material used is a rough-textured clay body (visible on the backs of the plates, as shown in the photos), which is characteristic of Deruta's ceramic tradition. The entire production process is carried out entirely by hand. While the origins of Deruta's pottery-making are not precisely known, it is well-documented that by the Middle Ages, the town was renowned for its high-quality ceramic production. The earliest written references to Deruta pottery date back to 1282. During the Renaissance, Deruta boasted more than fifty kilns, where celebrated artists such as Perugino, Pinturicchio, and Luca Signorelli collaborated. The exceptional craftsmanship of Deruta's ceramic artisans has endured through the centuries. In the early 20th century, a consortium was formed to unite the majority of local workshops, ensuring the quality of the ceramics produced. An official trademark, "Ceramiche Deruta," was also introduced, although individual artisans often chose not to sign their works, confident that Deruta ceramics were easily recognizable by their unique and distinctive style. Our plates are in good condition. On the bottom of each plate (as shown in red in the photos), you can observe three small marks that may resemble chips. These are actually the imprints left by the iron supports used during the firing process and subsequent cooling in small ventilated chambers, where the colors were permanently fixed.
