Alabaster sculpture depicting the half-bust of a young girl. The female figure, with a slightly tilted face, wears a soft scarf on her head and a flowing dress. The base, square in shape, bears a bas-relief depicting a view of the town. Signed L. Gregoire. The dimensions are: 49 x 38, height 49 cm. Jean-Louis Gregoire was a Parisian sculptor active in the 19th century. He is particularly known for his bronze and marble sculptures and figures. Gregoire trained under the celebrated sculptor Jean Jules Salmson at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and his works were first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1867. His bronze sculptures were often classical in nature and had themes war and music, typical of the academic style in which he had been trained.
