Grawunder attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, graduating with a degree in architecture in 1984. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Florence, Italy, to study and work for Gianni Pettena and Cristiano Toraldo di Francia of Superstudio. She then began working for Sottsass Associati from 1985 to 2001. She became a partner in 1989. In 2001, she left to found her own studio, where she produced collections of lighting objects for several lighting companies and designed several private residences around the world. Among her most famous projects is the Casa Aviary for Ernest Mourmans in Belgium, a joint project by Sottsass and Johanna Grawunder, considered one of the 50 houses that have influenced the history of world architecture. In 1993 she exhibited at the Mourmans Gallery in a famous exhibition dedicated to her and Sottsass entitled "Ettore Sottsass Large and small works, Johanna Grawunder Many small works".
