Carlo Francesco Mellone and workshop, Pair of terracotta angels, 18th

Pair of terracotta sculptures, representing the two angels in pendant. The two figures, in a mirrored position, are represented with great verisimilitude and attention to the characterization of the faces, represented with a considerable typing of characters and expressive rendering. The two figures are represented in the act of flying, the torso twisted with respect to the axis of the legs and the arms stretched to the side, to hold curtains or a central plaque. The bodies are covered by drapery with a plastic and lively rendering, in order to create further dynamism. Since these are most likely models used for the realization of the final putties, great attention has also been given to the performance of the hair and in particular of the wings, in which the detail of the plumage is well appreciated.
