Painting oil on canvas depicting "Giuseppe and Putifarre's wife", 17th

Description: The unknown painter, a follower of Carlo Maratta, illustrates the biblical episode (Genesis, 39.2) in which Giuseppe, who became trusted servant of the Pharaoh's officer, refuses the attention of his wife to flee. The cloak, in the hands of the woman, will constitute the tangible proof of the false accusations made to Joseph, decreasing the sentence of prison. The most common color in the painting is the very dark brown, almost black of the bottom. From this color the portrait of the girl enhanced even more by the clear dress and the color of the incarnate emerge for brightness. It is a strong contrast of brightness between the figure of the girl and the dark background. The light comes from the left and directly illuminates the girl's face, and that of the young Giuseppe. They also create dark and deep shadows to the right of the figure. In fact, the shadow cover part of the young man's body while the neck is almost dark, except on the profile of the throat. In the painting there is a particular language, the result of the calibrated fusion of baroque dynamisms and classic harmonies in vogue in the Marche in the seventeenth century.
