Item description

This old mask of an ancestor of the sukuma ethnic group has a remarkable patina of wear and a level of execution decidedly above the norm, which determine its rarity. The face is harmonious and well-balanced with almond-shaped eyes with a raised frame, a convex forehead and a half-open mouth that adds to the expressive intensity. The beard is usually associated with the wisdom of the elder, who in African culture enjoys much respect and is questioned on many issues. The surface of the mask is polished and bears traces of white kaolin from ritual use. White is the colour associated with the spirit world and is a symbol of the beauty and purity of the ancestor.
