This is a beautifully crafted antique Italian wooden box named after the town of Sorrento in southern Italy, which is famous for its intricate marquetry and inlay work. Polished walnut wood, commonly used in Italian marquetry. The top of the box features a central inlaid design showing three traditional Italian figures dancing. This style of inlay, made with different types and shades of wood, is a hallmark of Sorrento craftsmanship. The word "Sorrento" is inlaid or carved beneath the central design, marking its place of origin. The box is bordered on the sides and ends. Such boxes were popular souvenirs in the 19th and early 20th centuries, often purchased by travelers on the Grand Tour. Today, they are collected for their fine craftsmanship and historical charm. The box is in very good condition overall considering use and age.
