Item description
Fine gilt bronze bust sculpture of Marianne of France. Marianne is the allegorical national representation of the French Republic. Depicted as a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap (a conical red headdress with the tip folded forward), Marianne personifies the French Republic and represents the permanence of the values of the Republic, namely Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. The first representation of a woman wearing a Phrygian cap, an allegory of Liberty and the Republic, appears in the French Revolution. The origin of the name Marianne is not known with certainty, although it was widespread in the 18th century. It represents the population breaking free from the monarchy and the nascent Republic.
