Item description
Silver plated cruet with crystal bottles. Has a beaded edge and is surmounted by a micro-fused balustrade with garlands, festoons, and bows. The micro fused handle has a sober and elegant design, the cruet bears the marks of the most important and famous electroplate manufacturer, Elkington & Co. of Birmingham. The company was known for the very high quality of its production and for the particularity of its models. Elkington used to mark his items with the same date system as English silver, so we can say with certainty that the cruet was made in Birmingham in 1851. But the most interesting and extraordinary thing about our object is the crest that we find engraved on it: a castle embattled. The crest belongs to the MacNaughten Family (or MacNaughton) one of the oldest clans in Scotland (see Table 156-5, p.123 and p.368 of 'Fairbairn's-The book of crests of the families of Great Britain and Ireland' London Heraldry today, 1905). The Clan Macnaghten is amongst the Scottish clans who claim descent from the early Pictish rulers of the Mormaer of Moray. There is a document from 1297 that the clan received a charter from Alexander III of Scotland which granted to him the keepership of a castle warding the narrow Brander Pass, which was the gateway to the west. The history of this family intersects through the centuries with the history of Scotland: participation in the Scottish Wars of Independence, following King James IV in the Battle of Flodden, reconstruction of Dunderave Castle, alongside the Huguenots in the siege of La Rochelle, in the uprising of Glencairn against Oliver Cromwell, in the Restoration one of their members was appointed Knight, alongside John Graham the First Viscount Dundee in the Battle of Killiecrankie. In more Modern Times (1800-1900) one member of the Clan was an important judge, another was an illustrious lawyer and became Lord of Appeal in 1887, two other members of the family were killed in the First World War. This beautiful cruet since 1851 has belonged to this Clan, an object full of history and nobility.
