Item description
Oil on canvas depicting a beautiful landscape with classical ruins and some villagers and wayfarers. The painting has been previously re-tinted and is in an excellent state of preservation. The fine execution can be attributed with certainty to the painting production of Gaetano Ottani (Bologna 1720 - Turin 1801), who was not only an excellent painter, but also an important tenor and had a career as a stage designer. Gaetano Ottani (or Gaetano Bernardino Ottani) trained as a painter in Bologna at the Accademia Clementina and was inspired by the works of Ferdinando Galli da Bibbiena. He received commissions for decorations in the most important villas and palaces in Piedmont. He loved to depict landscapes with ruins, nocturnal visions on colonnades and invented seascapes. His scenes are imaginative and rich in detail. Inspired by the taste for storytelling of Venetian origin, he created elaborate and imposing architecture, classical or Gothic, which were elevated by his strong skills as a scenographer, so much so that they exceeded the frame of the painting. The painting has its beautiful early 18th century Salvator Rosa frame in black lacquer and ochre. We provide a guarantee of authenticity from our antiquarian gallery.
