Item description

Large mythological painting from the 18th century depicting the famous episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses with Mercury and Argus. Legend has it that the giant Argus had a hundred eyes, half of which were always open. He watched over the young Io, seduced by Jupiter and transformed into a heifer. The messenger of the gods put Argos to sleep with the hypnotic music of his flute and then beheaded him. Above we can then distinguish Mercury next to Juno, who transferred Argos' eyes to the tail of the peacock, which has since become her symbol. An Italian oil painting on canvas of great pictorial quality, the scene takes place in a lush bucolic landscape full of architectural whims and ruins. Work restored and retouched during the 20th century, overall in good state of preservation. 20th century wood and plaster frame, carved and gilded (bronze tint), beautifully decorated, with some signs of age. Painted light H 98x W 86.5 cm.
