Item description
Particular and elegant chair with a solid and functional structure; the most interesting part of the chair is the elaborate and fanciful backrest with a harmonious and refined design; in the middle there is a precious woodwork, carved with mastery and ability by a master cabinetmaker; the front legs have been meticulously turned to give them a light and proportioned shape, while the back legs have a slightly curved square section; the seat top can be disassembled and a wooden pin on the front crosspiece allows the top itself to fit perfectly into its natural seat. The seat upholstery was replaced in ancient times and is in good condition (a little wear on the front, see photo) so we did not consider doing any restoration on the whole chair because its authentic appearance and slight imperfections make it really seductive and charming and attest to its antiquity. The chair was handmade in Denmark in perfect Biedermeier style using feathered African mahogany wood between 1850 and 1855 during the reign of Frederick VII. The Biedermeier style, which spread mainly in Austria and Germany between 1820 and 1850, characterised furniture and furnishings that became simpler in response to the majesty of the Empire style. The Biedermeier style, which emerged after the Congress of Vienna and the decline of the Napoleonic Empire, was aimed in particular at the bourgeoisie, who wanted simple, functional furniture. The aim of the Biedermeier artistic movement was to exalt sobriety and harmony, modifying some of the stylistic motifs of the previous period, but stripping them of all the decoration, frills and excesses that had characterised it. In this sober and harmonious chair, the combination of curved and straight lines is skilfully emphasised in an interesting play of volumes and geometries, giving the object a timeless elegance that can characterise any room in the home. Measures width cm.48, depth cm.48, height cm.88, seat cm.48.
