Item description

Elegant and very particular thermos; the structure is made of sturdy Asian bamboo and inside there is a silvered glass part with a double cavity (Sir James Deward's vase) with a cork stopper for hermetic closure; the simple but sturdy shape of the handle is very particular; the metal part at the top, which is inserted into the bamboo, is shaped like a beak to facilitate the pouring of liquids; on the side of the thermos (see photo) one notices what may seem to be an imperfection, but is none other than a natural bamboo knot which attests to its authenticity. Natural bamboo, with its warm shades of colour, makes for a distinctive and original product. Analysing its physical and mechanical characteristics, it is hard, strong and dimensionally stable, able to withstand stress and pressure has great strength. It is stronger than oak, which is considered the most resistant wood. The thermos was designed by the Italian designer, furniture maker and decorator Aldo Tura (1909-1963) and produced between 1950 and 1955 by the company he founded in 1939 in Cusano Milanino (Lombardy-Italy). Working between the trends of Art Deco and modernism, Tura created luxury accessories and unique furniture, characterised by rich materials, sculptural forms and exclusive craftsmanship techniques. In the post-war years, while many furniture manufacturers were adapting their working methods to mass production, Tura continued to engage in traditional craftsmanship methods. He preferred complex forms and labour-intensive processes that could not be replicated in a large-scale production system. His mix of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and minimalist modern design pushed the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship. In his designs he used a wide range of unusual materials such as bamboo, goatskin, eggshells, parchment and wood veneers, employing his favourite colours: yellow, red and green. The Brooklyn Museum in New York has several of Tura's works, which were originally displayed in the touring exhibition 'Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today'. Many of his products are true collectors' items, in particular creations such as our thermos finished in bamboo and sometimes in goatskin and parchment. As we have said, Tura never adapted to the industrial process and this has meant that there are still a limited number of his objects on the market today. The use of bamboo to make our thermos has given us an object worthy of one of the greatest names in Italian design.
