Oil on canvas depicting Magdalene, Procaccini Italian School, 17th century

An important oil painting on canvas, from an important Venetian collection, depicting Mary Magdalene, a work that is stylistically and qualitatively very close to the great master: Giulio Cesare Procaccini, considered to be one of the greatest exponents of the Lombard Baroque school. In this painting, the author has proposed a very close cut, a close-up of Mary Magdalene lingering her gaze on the sacred text, supported by vanitas. This is an important work of strong emotion for the viewer, which also transpires from the vivid colouring of the face. The same chromatic passages often used by Procaccini can be found in the colour scheme. The painting is in a good state of conservation and has already been restored. It has been rintelated, cleaned, stuccoed in the colour fades and underwent reversible pictorial restoration by a well-known workshop in Bologna. The painting is placed in an important antique Venetian frame, made of carved wood. Canvas measurements: 51 X 68 cm. Provenance: - Private collection San Marino (RSM); - Private collection Bologna; - Private collection Venice.
