Plato's Academy, silk Baroque tapestry, 18th century
PLATINUM Seller in Milano, Italy
Baroque silk tapestry with applied painted cloth inserts at the faces and hands of the characters. The scene depicts Plato's academy, with the philosopher seated on the ground, his back against a tree, clad in a cassock and a mantle draping him, holding a tablet or scroll in his right hand. Plato is intent on delivering a philosophy lesson to his young pupils, with one of whom he is especially interjecting. Behind him is a rural landscape inhabited by men who are doing agricultural work. Set in coeval frame, molded in several tiers with alternating ebonized and tortoiseshell veneered parts.
