Item description

The Saffo table lamp was designed by Angelo Mangiarotti for Artemide in 1967. The aluminum base supports the mushroom-shaped lampshade in smoked Murano blown glass. The glass is mouth blown in two colors and in one piece. The Saffo lamp creates a fantastic ethereal light effect. This lamp has been out of production for many years and has never been re-edited. Artemide was founded in the province of Milan in 1959 by the designers Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza. In the following years, new designs were created for the evolving collections of Artemide, whose spirit has always been to create original and effective lamps, including suspension and ceiling lamps, in collaboration with the greatest design talents around. the world. Among Artemide's great successes we should mention the Eclipse (1967) by Vico Magistretti and the minimal halogen desk lamp Tizio (1972) by the Italian-German designer Michele De Lucchi which is one of the most popular office icons in the world. Again Tolomeo Lamp (1987) which has become a symbol of the "Made in Italy" style since the end of the last century. Today Artemide continues to develop high-tech productions that are always attentive to sustainability. Over time, many of Artemide's lighting products have been awarded the famous Compasso d'Oro award, and the company itself won the “Career Achievement” award in 1995. For more than 50 years Artemide has marked the trend of design innovation with sophisticated products that have influenced the history of world design. Confirmation of this is the presence of many of these objects in the major museums of modern art in the world. Angelo Mangiarotti [1] (Milan, February 26, 1921 - Milan, June 30, 2012 [2]) was an Italian architect, designer, urban planner and academic. He is one of the most important figures in the field of architecture and urban planning, especially Italian and American (but also Japanese and European), as well as internationally recognized as one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century and one of the most important figures in design. In addition to his main activities, Mangiarotti is also famous as a sculptor (passion, that for sculpture, which influenced him a lot in his last 20 years of career as a designer [3]), as well as for being one of the founders of ADI - Association for Industrial Design: the oldest and most important body linked to industrial design.
