Two antique black-lacquered Pont à Mousson boxes from the 19th century, from the Meiji era, depicting samurai and geishas. Pont à Mousson are lacquered papier-mâché objects with decorations. The larger of the two boxes depicts an outdoor scene with a lone samurai, a child and geishas in the background. It has a separate lid and a green interior. The smaller box depicts a chase on horseback. In the upper left corner is a two-character mark. The hinges and locking mechanism are fully functional. Very good condition. The larger box has an engraving on the lid, bottom left, which is visible on the inside.
