Oil portrait of 'Young Dante' by Bernardo Celentano in a splendid coeval carved and gilded gold-leaf frame. Italy, mid-19th century. Very good. The frame has some visible repairs on the back and some normal cracks on the gilding. Please evaluate through the enclosed photos. 21.5 x 17.5 cm, frame 46 x 35 cm. Bernardo Celentano (Naples, 23 February 1835 - Rome, 28 July 1863) was an Italian painter and exponent of verismo. His first teacher was Luigi Stabile; he later attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where his teacher was Giuseppe Mancinelli, an artist linked to the academic tradition. Before 1860, he settled in Rome, where he carried out an intense but brief artistic activity, including paintings with sacred subjects. Together with Domenico Morelli, of whom he was a friend, and Filippo Palizzi, he was an animator of the movement of an artistic renewal towards verism and in contrast to the rigid academic rules, which is known as the Resìna School. He exhibited historical subjects in Naples, Rome and Florence. He was buried in the Church of Sant'Onofrio al Gianicolo in Rome. His most famous work, The Council of Ten, is in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. Seventeen of his works, including oils, drawings, sketches and studies, are preserved in the Galleria dell'Accademia (Naples).
