Item description
A very special ebonised wooden coffee table from 19th-century Germany, of fine German manufacture. The coffee table is made entirely of turned and finely ebonised wood. At the base there is a very sinuous central trunk, in fact it seems to be composed of many spheres of increasingly smaller size as you go up, all black and shiny, very special. At the base of this trunk are four curved legs, finely crafted and polished; they are connected to the trunk by two small tubular structures that create a truly exquisite effect. In the centre of each sphere of the trunk are four tubular elements, one on each side. All these elements are made of gold-plated brass and painted black. Below the top are four wooden tubular elements that descend vertically to accommodate, at the end, a small, very decorative, black-painted brass bell. The top has an oval shape, the outline of which is decorated with a sort of enclosure formed by ebonised turned wooden elements with brass tips. In the centre of the top is a raised circle, also enclosed in the same manner. It is thought to have been a table for enjoying beer in company, as Germany has always been famous for its golden nectar.
