Item description
High relief in green marble from Prato depicting the name of Jesus within a circle with flames. The building and reforming work of St. Bernardine of Siena, who was devoted to this symbol, made it widespread from the 15th century thanks to the Order of the Observant Franciscans, of which the saint was appointed Vicar General in 1437. It is a unique example for the way it is represented, with an open curtain showing the sun with 32 alternating straight and undulating rays, with the trigram IHS engraved on the inside, surmounted by a small cross. The material is Prato green marble, also known as serpentine, which is widely used in the major Florentine monuments as well as in the polychrome façades of Tuscan Renaissance churches. The workmanship and quality of workmanship are remarkable. Artefact restored with the re-adhesion of small detached fragments.
