Item description
There would probably be no better artist to illustrate a story as beautiful and surreal as Alice in Wonderland. We are talking about Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), the Spanish artist who changed the concept of art in the 20th century. An admirer of Freud, Salvador Dali is known for his use of symbolism and recurring objects in all his works. This rug, made by the well-known carpet manufacturer Ege Axminster from a 1969 painting, features Alice skipping rope in a long fluttering dress, her head and hands depicted as a bouquet and her symbolic shadow figure beside her. The dark grid lines fixed on an ivory field fade into a vanishing point behind the mountains in the distance. Birds, abstract figures and a smaller secondary person punctuate the background in the distance. Dali's signature and his original crown symbol are intertwined in the lower left-hand corner.
