Rape of Europa, oil painting on canvas, second half of the 17th century

Oil painting on canvas depicting the Rape of Europa, second half of the 17th century. The myth tells that Zeus, in love with Europa, transforms himself into a beautiful and tame white bull in order to approach her. The woman, once on the animal's back, is abducted and taken to the island of Crete where she becomes queen and then mother of Minos. The work is rich in detail and decorative elements; on the lower left are putti playing with a triton and on the right are frightened handmaids who, gesturing, try to warn Europa. The painting has been recently restored and restretched and colors have been repainted in some spots.
