Item description
This rare and magnificent pair of armchairs, also known as 'Triennale', was designed by the great designer Gio Ponti in 1951. The chairs have the original ISA Bergamo manufacture label and are the first edition. The chairs have been examined and checked. The burnt orange ribbed fabric is original to the period, in its first patina. Slight discolourations of the fabric can be seen. Its sculptural, organic forms give strength to the seat and, through its almost suspended lines, lend lightness to the structure. The wooden frame is in its first patina, in fact slight signs of time and wear can be seen. In designing the armchair model for ISA Bergamo, Gio Ponti deconstructed the traditional wingback chair form, giving the design a greater lightness. Ponti's inventive structure emphasises emptiness, dissolving the mass of the upholstered chair to reveal a sculptural structure. The backrest, fixed by brass pins, and the seat appear suspended within the essential lines of the chair structure. These chairs are a truly rare piece of furniture, denoting the great depth of Italian design and suitable for very important and elegant living rooms. Literature Domus, no. 280, March 1953, p.
