Item description
Oil painting on canvas from the 17th century depicting Mary Magdalene washing Jesus' feet. According to the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is a guest at dinner with Simon the Pharisee. Once at the table, a woman approaches his feet to wash them, drying them with her hair and anointing them with a fragrant oil. The identification of this woman, a sinner, with Mary Magdalene is the result of a series of misunderstandings and is now a repeated tradition in art history. The name Mary is recurrent in the Bible, and Pope St. Gregory the Great believed that she was the same person. There is no real textual connection that identifies Magdalene with the sinner in this biblical episode. The painting has undergone conservation restoration, frame replacement, color restoration in some spots and has been restretched. Fitted with a 20th-century carved, lacquered and gilded wooden frame. Without the frame it measures 112 x 184 cm.
