Item description
Splendid altarpiece depicting 'The Dispute of Jesus with the Doctors of the Temple'. It is a work of considerable size executed in oil on canvas. One can see in the painting an effective solution of the architectural and decorative compartments, with an excellently constructed layout of the figures. One can observe clear references to the formal solutions of the painters of the second half of the 16th century in Cremona. The work can be attributed to Sigismondo Francesco Boccaccino and can be placed in the period between 1677 and 1680. We are aware of a letter that Boccaccino himself wrote thus: "Advancing in my mind, I took myself to the church of Santa Margherita in Cremona, all painted by the famous Giulio Campi, and there, inspiring myself, I copied the altar paintings on a large scale, commissioned by the most illustrious Signor Conte Ludovico Schizzi". This fundamental testimony sheds light on the fact that he had meditated on the architectural exemplars painted by his master precisely in San Sigismondo, where Boccaccino had drawn at length, putting into action those ingenious stylistic congeries that he would later weld to his own Roman experiences. The altarpiece measures 245 x 300 cm in height.
