Alessandro Mochetti, etching, 18th century










A beautiful 18th century etching print with a walnut-root frame. It is an engraving by the Italian engraver Alessandro Mochetti (1760 - 1812). Biographical information on Alessandro Mochetti is scarce. He was a pupil of Giovanni Volpato and worked mainly with Roman publishers. He participated in the production of the illustrative plates for the work, by several hands, The Raphael Bible, published in 1789 by Pietro Paolo Montagnani and which had subsequent editions and contributed his engravings to illustrate the work Il Duomo di Orvieto. For the series of prints Episodes in the Life of Pius VI he engraved the panel Departure from Rome of H.H. Pius VI for Siena escorted by French dragoons followed on the night of 20 February 1798. He engraved images from paintings by many artists, including Francesco Manno. His son Giuseppe was an engraver and worked at the Calcografia Romana (today the National Institute for Graphics).
