Item description

Kappa glass pendant lamp by Sergio Mazza for Artemide, 1960s. Sergio Mazza is an Italian designer born in 1931 in Milan. In 1955 he began freelancing and from 1961 he joined G. Gramigna in the Smc studio, dealing with furniture and industrial design. Among the various recognitions and awards he received were a mention at the Compasso d'Oro 1960 for the Delta lamp by Artemide and a silver medal for the Italian flat at the X Triennale in Milan. From 1967 he also started designing for Olivari, signing the Macco handles, up to the Giuliana model, with Gramigna, in 1987. In the editorial field, again with Gramigna, he directed the magazine 'Ottagono' from its foundation until 1988. Artemide is a company specialising in the production of lighting accessories (lamps, chandeliers, lighting points), founded by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza in 1959. The brand has been characterised from the beginning by a strong focus on design that has enabled it to win numerous international awards for its products over the years. Among the most prestigious names in Italian design, Artemide is also one of the world's leading companies in high-end residential and professional lighting. As early as 1967 it received its first award, the prestigious Compasso d'Oro for the Eclisse lamp, designed by Vico Magistretti. This award was followed by many others, at national and international level, making Artemide one of the symbolic companies in the field of design lamps. In 1996 Artemide adopted a new manifesto, with which it still identifies today: with the motto "The Human Light", the Milanese company emphasises its desire to place light at the service of man and his needs. Artemide's philosophy was immediately accepted by the public and the brand's success grew steadily, also demonstrated by its presence in the world's most prestigious shops and major museums of modern art. Since its birth, Artemide has collaborated with the most important names in international design, pursuing ambitious goals in terms of technology, aesthetics and respect for the environment.
