Item description

The Chippendale coffee table is crafted from the finest quality ebonized Sapele wood; the rectangular upper surface has been shaped with a delicate and refined scalloped line; it has a comfortable second top in the lower part which is also scalloped rectangular connected to the legs with partitions of a sophisticated shape; the legs have a classic and soft "cabriole" shape. For the construction of this coffee table, Sapele, a prestigious reddish wood similar to mahogany from Equatorial Africa, was ebonized. This sought-after material has a tightly woven texture and fine, uniform interwoven fibers with a good natural sheen. It is a robust type of wood, rather flexible, hard and compact. It is usually used for luxury furniture and wardrobes, but also for yacht and boat furnishings, as well as for sophisticated and expensive musical instruments. The coffee table was handcrafted in the Chippendale style between 1920 and 1925 in a cabinet making workshop in County Devon, South East England, an artisan area also known for its woodworking. Towards the end of the eighteenth century, an English cabinetmaker named Thomas Chippendale invented a series of furnishing accessories characterized by a unique and sophisticated style, precisely called Chippendale. It is one of the most famous styles, born in England but quickly spread throughout Europe. The uniqueness of the Chippendale style mainly concerns their origin and therefore the artistic currents that have influenced their design. The creators of these furnishings created them with the typically French aesthetics of Louis XV furniture and the Rococo style in mind, and manufactured simplified "English-style" versions. The coffee table has been restored by hand.
