Alessandro Mendini, Triglyph, ceramic sculpture for Superego, 2000s

Triglifo is an elegant statuette made entirely of ceramic that is part of a series of 12 columns designed by Alessandro Mendini and produced by Superego in the early 2000s. The sculpture is signed and numbered under the base. The Triglyph column was produced in a limited series of 50 pieces, inspired by iconic elements of classical Greek and Roman architecture. Triglyph is an architectural term referring to the vertically channelled tablets on the Doric frieze in classical architecture, and is so called because of the angular channels in them. Alessandro Mendini was an Italian designer and architect. He played an important role in the development of postmodern and radical Italian design. He was interested in mixing different cultures and forms of expression. His works ranged from graphics, furniture, interiors, paintings and architecture and he also worked for the magazines Domus, Modo and Casabella. Alessandro Mendini has been the recipient of numerous international awards, including the Compasso d'Oro in 1979, 1981 and 2014. He was awarded the honorary title of the Architectural League of New York and the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic.
