Item description

Napoleon III sideboard in Vernis Martin style painted wood, made in France in the 19th century (around 1860s-70s). The front features a hinged door with a painting of an amorous scene in the center; embellishing the sides are two fluted columns ending in gilt bronze Corinthian capitals. Door fitted with a key (original of the period). The recessed top is made of white statuary marble. The undertop band is adorned with a gilt bronze decoration with a Marie Antoinette style knot in the center. The Vernis Martin technique was developed in 1728 by the Martin brothers, who held a monopoly on it for 20 years. It is applied in overlapping layers, then left to dry and then painted with landscapes, figures and genre scenes. The decorations on the Martin Vernis were entrusted to talented painters. This fashion continued into the 19th century and lacquered and painted furniture became a feature of the Napoleon III style. Restored by traditional shellac and handmade alcohol method. Complete with certificate of authenticity.
