Congress bookcase in white steel plate by Lips Vago, 1960s
SILVER Seller in Padova, Italy
The 'Congresso' bookshelf is a modest, sturdy bookcase made of sheet steel. The model is self-supporting, making it a versatile piece. The sheet metal folds upwards at the end of the shelf and serves as book ends. The bookcase was produced by Lips Vago: a merger between the Italian blacksmith company Vago and the Dutch cabinet company Lips. It was shortly after the merger of these two companies that they designed models for archives and libraries like this particular piece. The shelving unit was so popular that it won the Smau award for industrial design in 1968.
