Item description

The massive and characteristic Murano glass ashtray has a strong line, with clean, decisive cuts and very accentuated edges; the colours red (obtained with gold chloride) and yellow (obtained with a mixture of sulphur and cadmium) combine with harmony and precision. The ashtray was created between 1964 and 1968, in a small furnace in Murano (Italy) run by former Master Glassmakers of the Mandruzzato company who made the ashtray following the company's style and using precisely the 'submerged glass' technique. The 'sommerso' was first invented in Murano in the late 1930s, but became popular in the 1950s thanks to the skill and inventiveness of Murano's master craftsmen. The 'submerged glass' technique is that process which, starting from a blown or solid glass, allows to obtain several superimposed layers of different colours with suggestive chromatic effects; this is possible by immersing the glass being worked in crucibles with different colours. The artefact is thus formed by several layers of different thickness and colour such as to create incredible chromatic effects and decorations within the object itself; the operation is not simple and is only performed by very experienced Master Glassmakers. After this phase, the master glassmaker, using special smooth tools, gave the linear and geometric shape to our ashtray, which once cooled down went on to the delicate phase of flattening and polishing by hand with cork wheels, operations that allowed the surfaces to be perfectly flattened, polished and exceptionally shiny. The Mandruzzato company is a renowned glassworks based in Murano and is known for its exquisite glass creations, including ashtrays. Mandruzzato ashtrays are made using traditional glassblowing techniques perfected over generations in Murano. They are characterised by their vibrant colours, bold geometric patterns, eye-catching colour combinations and high-quality workmanship. Each ashtray is a unique piece of art, showcasing the skill and creativity of the glass artisans. The artisans of the small Murano glassworks have mastered the colour of the glass with their trademark mastery, given the ashtray a strong and elegant shape, worked and subjected the glass to their artistic sensibility, and created a unique and fantastic object that fascinates us with its unparalleled workmanship that contributes to the special and captivating play of light. The ashtray is in good condition. It measures 16 cm in diameter, 8 cm in height. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
