Item description
Carlo Carrà (Quargnento, Alessandria 1881- Milan 1966), a multifaceted artist, began his career as a draughtsman when he was only 12 years old. In 1906 he studied at the Brera Academy under Cesare Tallone, where he came into contact with Umberto Boccioni. Carrà first joined Divisionism and later Futurism, signing the Futurist Manifesto and the Technical Manifesto of Futurist Painting in 1910. In 1916 he approached the metaphysical painting of Giorgio De Chirico but it was not until 1919 that he began the renewal of his style towards that 'realism' that led him to the simplification of forms and compositions. Carrà's graphic production is closely linked to his painting and the small plates including La spiaggia di Moneglia and Vele al chiuso of 1923 are considered his most successful. From 1941, he held the chair of painting at the Brera Academy. In the sheet, also known as Female Nude, the artist depicts a monumental woman rising from the water like a Venus. The statuesque figure, caught whole as she proceeds to the right, is depicted nude, silhouetted between a dark sky and the barely visible sea horizon line. Wet hair falls to the nape of her neck with one hand reaching behind her ear; this simple, intimate gesture clashes with the figure's androgynous, giant-like appearance. The use of lithography is dictated by the search for delicate atmospheres sublimating reality in a mystical place, in an eternal time. Sheet numbered in pencil lower left: 48/100 and signed in pencil: C. Carrà. Dry stamp of Libreria Prandi, Reggio. Print run of 100 copies, plus three proof copies. The sheet belongs to the Segreti folder published by Edizioni della Colomba, Milan, 1944, edited by G. Geogerino and A. Sassu. The sheet was subsequently cancelled. Two preparatory drawings are known, dated 1942 and 1943 respectively. Excellent impression. Excellent state of preservation.
