Item description

Napoleon III chalice-shaped vase made by Ferdinand Barbedienne, famous French sculptor and bronze caster who lived between 1810 and 1892. Created around 1860 and known as the "de Warwick" cup, it is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The materials used are gilded bronze and red marble for the base, the same type of marble used for Napoleon's tomb. The cup design displays exquisite attention to detail; the gilded bronzes and polychrome cloisonné enamels reveal great elegance. Around the rim is a decorative frieze of leaves and flowers in a stylized Greek "riserva". In the center of the cup are four beautifully sculpted bronze faces. The wide double-snailed bronze handles are decorated with two weaves often referred to as "Napoleonic weaves", reflecting the influence of the Napoleonic era. The cup is supported by a pedestal with a round and square base, also in gilded bronze. The pedestal has the signature of Ferdinand Barbedienne, indicating the artist's participation in its creation. Also under the base is a label that provides more information about the piece. Overall, this object represents the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic sensibility of Barbedienne: the combination of gilt bronze, red marble and intricate detailing make it a truly extraordinary and valuable collector's piece. In good condition; it has minor scratches.
