Item description

Sabrina chair designed by Gastone Rinaldi for Rima in the 70s. Characterized by the chromed steel tubular structure and the cushions covered in brown imitation leather. Gastone Rinaldi was born in Padua in 1920. He initially worked for the Rima company founded by his father di lui Mario Rinaldi in 1916. In his work of him as a designer he was able to come into contact with many of the major Italian designers, including Giò Ponti, Carlo Mollino, Alberto Rosselli, Franco Campo and Carlo Graffi, Michele De Lucchi and Marco Zanuso. In 1954 he won the Compasso d'Oro Award with the DU30 chair produced by Rima. In 1974 he founded the company Thema. In 1981 his Dafne chair produced in 1979 received a mention at the Compasso d'Oro, as also in 1981 the Aurora. The Saturno sofa is part of the prestigious collection of the MoMA modern art museum in New York. Gastone Rinaldi died in Padua in 2006. Mario Rinaldi was the founder of the metal furniture manufacturer RIMA, born in 1916, and of which Gastone Rinaldi took over the management in 1948, together with his brother di lui Giorgio. In the post-war years, RIMA quickly became a leading company in the sector in Italy, creating highly successful designs including the Sabrina Chair (1970s). In 1956 RIMA began producing sofas with avant-garde folding metal structures, of which the best example is the Saturno Sofa (c. 1958), part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Due to internal conflicts, Rinaldi left RIMA in 1974, and founded Thema which he would later close in 1989. In good condition, the chromed structure and upholstery of the cushions show the inevitable signs of aging
