It is signed but indecipherable; the great skill of execution, however, hints at great names in painting. It is not dated but in style and costume it can be placed in the first half of the 20th century. This fine painting depicts a young girl seated and interrupted in the act of reading; the style of sober clothing and hairstyle is typical of the 1940s-50s. The background is rendered by draperies. What is most striking is the young woman's face: the expression is serious yet sad, the large eyes show an absorbed almost worried look, and the complexion, despite being finely made up, appears gaunt. The painting itself looks static, but an experienced eye will notice how the author has used a play of light and shadow on the blouse that reveals its movement. The portrait is very reminiscent in subject and style of paintings by the great Italian painters of the first half of the 20th century, such as Felice Casorati, Gino Severini, and others. The painting is in excellent state of preservation and has no defects.
