Item description
Fine dining set composed of mahogany table with round top in purple Calacatta marble and four chairs in Neoclassical style, produced by Fratelli Barni Mobili d'Arte, Seveso in the 1950s. The table, with a diameter of 114 cm, is characterised by its fine marble top resting on a wooden frame with a central shaft turned and carved with a twisted motif, resting on a tripod with finials carved with scrolls and acanthus leaves. The lower part of the central shaft is decorated with two concentric circles. The precious Calacatta purple marble (also known as Breccia Medicea, as it was widely used by Cosimo I de Medici, Lord of Florence) is 2.8 cm thick. During a transport in the 1960s, there was a fracture in the marble top, which was excellently reconstituted, as the photos show. The four mahogany wood chairs are characterised by a backrest with a finely carved scroll with six vertical elements and a decorative motif of concentric circles. The seat, with upholstery to be reviewed, is covered with satin fabric with a cream-coloured background, vertical stripes in dark pink and patterned decorative motifs. The furniture maker who made the table and chairs also produced the mahogany sideboard that belongs to the same room. The legs of the sideboard, table and chairs feature the same carvings, with acanthus leaves and scrolls. Under the table is the label of the Fratelli Barni Mobili d'Arte Seveso manufacture, a company specialised in the production of style furniture, active in the Milan area since the 1930s and with a showroom in Milan at Via dei Giardini 3. The object, which is in vintage condition and in need of some intervention, is a classic example of the mid-century Lombard manufacturing tradition. The dating to the first half of the 1950s is certain as the room is part of the furniture in the Milan flat of a married couple married in July 1951.
