Item description
Antique 18th century French sculpture. Exceptionally large work in wood and plaster, carved, lacquered and gilded depicting a life-size Saint, Saint Francis de Sales, of excellent quality. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) was proclaimed Saint by Pope Alexander VII and is one of the Doctors of the Church. A polychrome sculpture of fabulous size finely carved and chiselled to the finest detail. Object for antique dealers and collectors of antique sacred art, ideal for display in an important salon, study or private chapel. Work in beautiful patina showing various signs of time, colour fading and inactive woodworm holes (see photo). Sculpture hollowed out on the back (see photo). Remarkable the skill with which the sculptor has depicted the drapery of the Saint's garment and the quality of its gilding (see photo). Note the naturalism with which the hands are depicted. With the left one he holds the missal to his chest while with the right one he offers the viewer a heart adorned with a cross (see photo). Object of high age in overall good state of preservation with due signs of time.
