Item description
Burin engraving depicting a putto and a sea horse created by Giovanni Andrea Maglioli (active in Rome between 1580 – 1610). Maglioli was an Italian engraver about whom we have little information. Active in Rome or Naples towards the end of the 16th century, some elaborate engravings are attributed to him which have putti and fantasy sea animals as their subjects. Not cataloged by Bartsh, studied by Nagler and Petere Jessen in the Catalog of Ornamental Engravings of Berlin. His inventions have often been copied in the past, proving the popularity of his subjects. The sheet belongs to a series of sea monsters and cherubs in Mannerist style, the debt towards classical sculpture is evident. A putto grasps a trident with his right hand and with the other the mane of the sea monster he rides with the appearance of a horse and a long tail twisted into a spiral. Behind them a large dolphin cuts through the waves. The fine line and the dense intersection of lines show great technical ability and a compositional rendering aimed at enhancing the plasticity of the figures, the chiaroscuro contrasts create a silvery tone. Engraved on the bottom right within a scroll "I.A. magliolo fa". Excellent impression from the intense blacks trimmed between the stop and the framing line. Excellent state of conservation. Bibliography: Nagler, Die Monogrammisten I; Berliner Ornamentstichkatalog.
