Item description
Pair of 400 "Tank" armchairs by Alvar Aalto for Artek, 2000s. Structure in curved wood, wood and plywood, upholstery in salmon pink leather. What do this armchair and one of the most iconic wristwatches in the world have in common? Well, as can be seen from their common nickname, the inspiration: both the Cartier Tank and the current 400 "Tank" armchair by Artek, one of Alvar Aalto's best designs, were inspired by a tank. And a very specific one: we are in fact talking about the Renault FT17 from the First World War, a machine with a minimal but frighteningly lethal design that with its purpose-oriented lines helped shape some iconic pieces of design of its century. Originally designed in 1936 and presented during the Milan Triennale, the armchair has remained in production ever since and its lines have not aged much over the course of almost a century. The armchairs proposed here are upholstered with a gorgeous salmon pink leather tone, they were produced in 2002 and have spent their entire lives in storage. They are practically unused but show signs of dust and require delicate cleaning to bring out their full splendor. Seat height: 37 cm.
