Item description
Oil painting on canvas from the 18th century depicting a landscape with a rainbow; this is a copy from the famous painting by Peter Paul Rubens, made between 1632 and 1635, currently in the Hermitage Museum. The large pastoral scene presents a wide landscape view that pushes the eye as far as the distant seacoast; over it the sky is gradually opening, allowing glimpses of blue on the left, while on the right, among the darker clouds remaining from the storm, a large rainbow is revealed. In the foreground, a group of shepherds and shepherdesses are delighting in love games, discreet and festive, amidst their herds, which are resting and watering at the nearby stream. The whole scene is enlivened by a dimension of joyful relaxation and refreshment, as if the rainbow has restored serenity to the environment, bringing light and with it serenity back into the world. Compared to Rubens' painting, some elements have changed here, particularly the rainbow, which is here shifted to the right instead of being central; the dimensions are also larger than in the original work. The frame bears a label attributing it to Jacob Jordaens, a Flemish painter who was a follower of Rubens, but the attribution is not validated. Restored and restretched, the painting is presented in a gilded frame in the style. Size without frame: 200 x 220 cm.
